These lovely antique roses brighten up what could be a rather ordinary alley. The morning sun was all the inspiration I needed for painting in this historic neighborhood of Ft. Wayne. Please note that this painting is still wet so there may be a bit of reflection of light in my photos.

Hiking on Oahu for my husband and I was most likely a once in a lifetime event. Here we found a clearing on our way up to Manoa Falls. We read that it was a rugged trail, which it was. However, all our hiking in Southern Indiana made it a piece of cake. Of course the falls at the end were beautiful.

Being from a land locked state, I was mesmerized by watching the surfers. They would be up before the sun and out waiting for the first waves. The morning sun would rise and you could see the surfers sitting on their boards bobbing up and down on the surf, waiting and conversing with each other. What a difference from hitting the gym before work. What a great way to start the day for your body, mind and soul.

This painting reminds me of one of my favorite things, sea glass. The broken bits of paint remind me of one of my favorite painters also, Edgar Payne. I will be honest, I get very bored painting the same location or season or anything for too long. Winter is just beginning here in the Midwest, but I am ready to paint something other than the grays. Which explains the beach scenes the last few days. Don't get me wrong, I can find something that pulls me to paint just about anywhere and anytime. I find that if I paint the same thing for too long I get in a rut and start to paint on autopilot. So to shake it up I wanted to paint some scenes from a recent trip to Durango and Silverton, CO.

I could not wait to paint the first snow in the woods. The sun was setting. The few lingering leaves of fall "popped" off the blue shadows on the snow. This contemprary impression has an abstract feel to it in my efforts to capture the moment without getting too detailed in all the trees.

I encourage you to notice how the painting becomes clearer as you step back a few feet rather than closely from your monitor.

Hey, something a little different from my landscapes. I really had fun changing it up. You never know when you will find inspiration. The other day we had an easy dinner, breakfast. I made cinnamon, raisin french toast, eggs, hash browns and sausage. While I was preparing everything, I thought I should take a few pics of the kitchen aftermath. I know, I would have preferred to set up my gear and paint it right there, live, but I couldn't leave everything out all night till the next afternoon, when I had time to paint, ew. I am an artist, but I am also the mom of 4, the mom in me just couldn't do it :)

I love the amazing colors on the inside of the empty egg shells, wowza!

I enjoy the challenge of painting a corn field without being trite. The other day I posted an attempt or study of cornfields that I removed from my blog. I really enjoyed the journey of this painting. Working with thin washes and then building up to thicker layers. This process worked well with this dry, scrubby, field of soybeans, ready for harvest and the thicker highlights on the grain and sky. My goal in most paintings is to simplify the details to capture the overall feeling that inspired me to paint the scene in the first place. So many times it is too easy to forget this and get too detailed or overwork a piece.

My son took some great photos of the beautiful landscape on our way to the lake for a camp weekend this summer. I figured they would be a great springboard for my painting this fall and winter.

We had such a good HOT summer for camping, canoeing, hiking, swimming. One of those hot summers I seem to remember having when I was a kid. I think we went through more popcycles and ice cream than your typical summer.

Since I began this blog in 2006, I have always struggled with photographing my paintings to achieve their truest likeness for online viewing. I know monitors and screens vary slightly from one to the next, but I am working on the lighting in order to get my photos clearer and not so dim.

Sunsets on the East coast of the U.S. are so different from the glorious sunsets on the Pacific. The Atlantic side has the sunrise on the ocean which is beautiful. The sunset on the Atlantic is a shorter moment since the sun is drifting further away from the ocean. You can catch a glimpse of the sunset in the clouds and the long shadows on the beach. I know this is obvious information, and I sound quite random :D but it is an interesting thought when you are painting the fading light of a sunset in this situation.

The countryside is so beautiful in the spring. The delicate greens sparkle in the pastures. I am pleased with the atmosphere in the sky and fields of this painting. You can see in most of my paintings the more simplified,broad brushwork, but sometimes scenes like these just demand a bit of delicacy in the brushwork to convey what first attracted me to the landscape.

The photo of this painting may look a bit odd. I honestly didn't have much time or patience to play around and get it just right. The actual painting is a soft impression of some lovely spring flowers, however the lighting was a bit harsh and created a lot of shadows and may have washed out some of the subtleties. I had fun playing around with this one. Sometimes you need to do just that.

This painting look familiar? Yes, it is very similar to yesterday's painting posted. When I completed it, I really wanted to see those irises with a warmer background. Unfortunately, I finished this painting after dark so I will have to re-photograph it in the daylight tomorrow, hope it's not cloudy.

Many years ago, when my oldest son was quite young, we were leaving the zoo and he let go of his balloon. Of course there were quite a few tears. I tried to comfort him by telling him that his balloon probably floated all the way to heaven for someone to have. It was a nice thought and seemed to make him feel a little better.

We have many lovely parks in the city. This is in Foster Park which offers golf, trails, tennis and beautiful gardens surrounded by woods and a river. I always look forward to seeing the many spring bulbs and lilac bushes. It is also a beautiful backdrop for senior pictures and weddings.

I am sorry to say I did not stand in this field to paint this. Warmer, spring winds are here so these days are not far off. Today it is in the 60's (F) and I opened every window in the house. I painted this in my studio while my toddler napped. Besides the usual mundane daily activities, we had a full day of playing in the sandbox, blowing bubbles and playing basketball.

Oh, how I will not forget, that I longed for these summer days in the midst of a long snowy winter. I will not forget, I will not forget...
I do love how the thick humid air and the overcast sky mutes the range of color and value creating a soft, unifying painting. Before you know it, the sky clears and the details sharpen. This is one of the reasons why I love to paint, the possibilities of a single landscape are endless.

This location is very close to the previously posted painting, but just about an hour before the sunset. The changing light makes such a transformation.

This scene is far different from most of the weather we have today in Indiana. We had a high of 14 degrees and a couple feet of snow on the ground. February is one of the shortest months but once spring fever sets in it seems like one of the longest. Stay warm and safe spring is coming.

Hey! I'm back, I know, it has been so long since I have posted a painting. All is fine here. Just getting through this cold and snowy winter. I have not been able to paint. I would try and it just didn't flow. I tried painting through it, but my heart just wasn't there. So, I took a break. It is kind of funny to see what happens after not painting for a while. It kind of looks like someone hijacked my blog because this painting is a bit different for me. It is all a process and blogging is such a cool way to record an artist's journey. I hope to get back on a roll, I miss blogging and I miss the interaction with so many great people out there in the blogoshere.
